Essays Service Above Self

When I was nine years old, my father went on a mission’s trip to the Philippines. When he came back, he brought pictures and stories. I decided that I wanted to experience the Philippines for myself. I raised the money it cost to travel 17,000 miles across the globe. Since I was so young at the time, I couldn’t get a job, so I had to be creative to come up with the funds. I grew my own flowers and made bouquets to sell. I sold jewelry at hand-crafted bazars and other events. I spent hours a day after school beading necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. I also made baked goods to sell at a local farmer’s market.

After two years of hard work, I had raised enough money for airfare. My mom contacted our friends who live in the Philippines to arrange our visit. Just before I left, a friend of ours gave me a $100 bill to spend on the children in the Philippines. Though I didn’t know it at the time, this seemingly small amount of money would impact countless lives. It would take a Filipino man about a month to make $100.

Our team volunteered at Gentle Hands Orphanage in the city of Manila. We dressed up as silly clowns and made the children laugh. I brought my face paints and got to know the children while I painted their faces. Each child in the orphanage has a heart-breaking story. Romel was found in a trash can. Kimberly was found locked in a rice hut where she had starved for a week, to this day she stores packaged snacks in her pants, still fearing starvation. A sibling group of three were found malnourished in a squatter village to the point of being catatonic. It didn’t take me long to realize I wanted to use part of the $100 for the Orphanage. The next day at a street market, I bought over 50 teddy bears for the children. I bought supplies for the nursery, such as diapers, bottles, and wipes. I also bought snacks for all the children.

After buying supplies for the orphanage, I still had plenty of money left over. I wanted to impact more lives, so, I bought rice and chicken to feed 500 children living in poverty. This took place at an event called “Super Kids”, where hundreds of children come from the surrounding squatter villages for a time of fun and games. After the event, they eat. It was such a blessing to see these children’s faces light up as I handed them a bag containing a small scoop of rice and minimal piece of chicken. For most, this was their biggest meal of the week. Ever since then, I haven’t looked at my meals the same. I have seen true poverty and what it means to be in fear of starvation. I will never again take a meal for granted.

It was a privilege to be able to spend time with the children at the orphanage and the children at Super Kids, but perhaps the most impactful time for my service was helping with a kindergarten class. They come from a squatter village over a mile away. The school is based on volunteer teachers. These children would not receive an education otherwise because most schooling has to be payed for. This kindergarten is supported by donations, including uniforms for the children to wear at school and lunch each day. I helped the children with their work, got to know them, eat with them, and played games with them. I taught them how to play duck duck goose. They loved it! These children have no material wealth, yet they contain true joy.

I believe our mission’s team brought about change in a colossal way. It was truly amazing to see the impact of persistent fundraising and seeing the impact that was made for those in need. This experience taught me a lot about what it means to truly serve others in need. At the young age of 11, I grasped the concept of service. Since then, I have volunteered with children through many different organizations, including Door of Hope Church daycare, Branded Youth Group, after school clubs, tutoring programs, and a private daycare because to me service above self means that I am willing to put my desires aside to impact the lives of individuals in a positive way. I am determined to dedicate my life to helping people, and I desire to serve others. I know I will continue to accomplish all I can for the greater good of helping those in need. After all, one way to make a true impact for others is to live out the term, service above self.

Commitment is My Greatest Quality Essay

675 Words3 Pages

Commitment is more than a promise to do or give something. It is the state or quality of being dedicated and maintaining an attitude of someone who works extremely hard to do or support something. Commitment not only requires full attention, but also requires diversity. A person who processes the quality of commitment should be very responsible and well-rounded. I believe I am a person who represents this unique quality by processing patriotism, willingness to place service above self, ability to set goals and achieve them, friendliness and helpfulness, diverse interests, strong work ethic, confidence and leadership, and a strong sense of humor.

Memorial Day isn’t just a day off of school or work; it is an annual holiday in which to be supportive of all past and present veterans. Since my father is a former military veteran, my family and I attend many local parades dedicated to veterans. We usually spend Independence Day honoring our country with fireworks and spend a day in Washington on Memorial Day. In addition, my love for my country has led me to place the service of others above myself. I have recently joined the volunteer program for Lancaster General Hospital on the neurology floor which cares for cardiac arrest and stroke patients. Having explored and benefited from my volunteer process at Lancaster General Hospital, I have decided to pursue a career in the medical field. Goal setting is one of the most needed abilities in life. It is what keeps a
